Defining the Clinical Research Data Management Profession: The Relationship Between a Profession and Its Science

 

NOTE: The speaker from UNC-Chapel Hill who was originally scheduled for April 9 has canceled. Meredith Zozus, PhD from Duke Center for Health Informatics will present in his place.


Biosketch:

Meredith Zozus, PhD has been at Duke since 1998 and has led Clinical Data Integration at the Duke Clinical Research Institute until 2007 when she joined the Duke Translational Medicine Institute as the Associate Director of Clinical Research Informatics.  She came to Duke with a decade of experience in data management, programming, and quality control and an established career in research data management in both the academic and industry sectors.  Dr. Zozus served leadership roles in multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded Clinical Trial Network Data Centers, and is currently the PI of two FDA funded grants to standardize clinical data elements in Cardiovascular Imaging, Schizophrenia, and Major Depressive Disorder. She is also the recipient the of a National Library of Medicine grant to study Health Information Quality.  At Duke, she is an instructor in the Clinical Research Management and Health Informatics programs, and serves as an Associate Director for Academic Programs for the Duke Center for Health Informatics.

Her distinguished career includes serving on the Society for Clinical Data Management (SCDM) Board of Trustees, serving as the Chair of the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) Industry Advisory Board (IAB), serving as the Chairman for the SCDM Good Clinical Data Management Practices (GCDMP) Committee from 1998 – 2001, and author of two GCDMP sections on Measuring and Assuring Data Quality.  Dr. Zozus has remained active in professional societies and national standards development organizations.  She is a long-time member of Health Level-7 (HL7), and past co-Chair of the HL7 Clinical Interoperability Council (CIC).  Dr. Zozus has been a frequent presenter at industry meetings, and publishes in the informatics and clinical trial operational literature.  Her research interests center around secondary data use and include, data quality, standards development, and clinical research informatics.  She received her Master's in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University, and her PhD in Health Informatics at the University of Texas at Houston School of Health Information Sciences.
